Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to Green Motion's Frequently Asked Questions section. We have collated some of the most frequently asked questions to assist you with your rental enquiry/booking.

Q. what is the minimum age for renting a vehicle from Green Motion?

A. To rent a car in the United Kingdom, from Green Motion, you must be aged 21 or over and have held a full clean driving licence for at least two years. A Young Driver Surcharge is applicable for drivers between the age of 21 - 25 years.

Q. Does Green Motion offer a one-way rental service?

A. At the present time, Green Motion is unable to offer a one-way rental facility via our online booking facility. However, in special circumstances your requirements may well be met. Please contact our Central Reservations department or your local branch directly.

Q. Can I add an additional driver?

A. The rental vehicle is normally only insured for the person who makes the hire. However, if you wish to add an additional drive to the rental contract this can be done so prior to the commencement of hire either through our Central Reservations department or directly with the hire location (store). Additional drivers are subject to the same conditions regarding age, credit card and driving licence as the hirer. There will be a charge for each additional driver.

Q. How many passengers can travel in a vehicle?

A. It is important when you are making the booking for you to inform either Green Motion's Central Reservations or your hire location (store) of the number of people traveling. Green Motion will recommend the vehicle best suited for your requirements that will accommodate the number of people traveling. Each vehicle has a maximum number of people that are legally able to travel in it which is usually equal to the number of full seat belts fitted within the vehicle.

Q. What is the London Congestion Charge & Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ)?

A. The London Congestion Charge is a surcharge levied against all vehicles entering the Congestion Charge zoneevery day, except between Christmas Day (25 December) and New Year's Day (inclusive)To find out more, please click here

To help improve air quality, an Ultra Low Emission Zone has been introduced (ULEZ) which operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year, except Christmas Day, within the same area of central London as the Congestion Charge. Most vehicles, including cars and vans, need to meet the ULEZ emissions standards or their drivers must pay a daily charge to drive within the zone:

From 25 October 2021, the ULEZ is expanding from central London to create a single, larger zone up to, but not including, the North Circular Road (A406) and South Circular Road (A205).

Currently the zone covers the following areas: Bayswater, Notting Hill, North and South Kensington, Knightsbridge, Chelsea, Brompton, Belgravia, Pimlico, St. James's, Waterloo, Borough, City of London, Clerkenwell, Finsbury, Holborn, Bloomsbury, Soho. Mayfair and parts of Marylebone. There is a charge for the use of vehicles on roads within the charging zone, but not for using roads round the perimeter itself.

Failure to purchase a permit will result in the customer of a vehicle being issued with a penalty notice to the value of £130, this would be discounted to £65 if paid within 14 days. If Green Motion receives a penalty notice, Green Motion will pay on behalf of the customer and then send an invoice to the customer with the addition of an administration fee.

For further details regarding congestion charging please click here to view the Transport for London website or call Transport for London on 0207 9414500.

For information with regards to whether your Green Motion hire vehicle is congestion charge exempt please check the fleet section accessed from the home page of greenmotion.com

Q. Is my Green Hire Vehicle exempt from Congestion Charging?

A. Many of Green Motion's vehicles are either exempt from paying the London Congestion Charge or pay a reduced charge. To find out if the hire vehicle of your choice is exempt please visit our fleet section accessed from Green Motion's homepage.

Q. Do you provide Disability vehicles?

A. Green Motion are happy to provide automatic vehicles and make reasonable adaptions to vehicles to enable access, such as removing move-able items eg parcel shelves to enable storage of Wheelchairs. More permanent or structural adaption of vehicles is not possible due to the vehicle acquisition regulations. Due to the complexity of mobile devices and removable controls, branches do not stock controls or devices but are happy for such controls to be used. Suppliers who may be able to assist are Lynx and Adapted Vehicle Hire. Lynx specialise in the provision of mobile controls http://lynxcontrols.com/hand-controls/ and Adapted Vehicle Hire offer a full range of adapted vehicles https://adaptedvehiclehire.com/vehicle-hire/short-term-hire/ Please inform us of any assistance you require at least 48 hours before your rental.
