Why you should visit Edinburgh this winter

As winter hits, you’d be right in thinking that a trip south in search of slightly warmer temperatures is at the forefront of most travellers thinking. So, how about a journey up north to the notoriously cold Scotland, and in particular, Edinburgh?

Summer is the most popular time to visit Scotland when the population in the capital and other major cities almost doubles. Travellers to the city get to witness the magical sights through the winter season. Edinburgh really flexes its muscles in the winter and is a truly special place to be with a host of glittering seasonal activities.

If you are wondering where to go on a road trip in your car hire through winter, there are plenty of reasons why Edinburgh should be at the top of the list. The Scottish capital is already home to some stunning family attractions but here are some particularly impressive events in Edinburgh through winter:

Christmas markets

Oh, we do love a Christmas market! European city breaks in winter are closely aligned with the quality of Christmas market. In Edinburgh, there are three separate markets to choose from through winter! The is the Scottish Market where you can enjoy native food, drink and craft; the European Market for unique goods and Christmas gifts; and the Children’s Market in Santa Land for presents for the little ones.

Santa Land

As well as housing a Christmas market for little ones, Santa Land is a festive fairground with six fun rides, an Elves' Workshop hidden in the Christmas Tree Maze and Santa's Grotto for a chance for kids to talk through their Christmas lists to the man himself! A must visit for tourists with children.

Edinburgh’s Hogmanay

A winter trip guide to Edinburgh wouldn’t be complete without a mention of Edinburgh’s Hogmanay, one of the world’s greatest New Year celebrations. The three-day celebrations include a torchlight procession through the city, a street party, fireworks and concerts. On New Year’s Day, those brave enough take a dip in the ice-cold Firth of Forth during the annual Loony Dook.

Burns’ Night

Burns’ Night is celebrated throughout Scotland every year on the 25th of January to mark the birth date of the Scottish poet Robert Burns. The night is a great time to find yourself in the capital. There are plenty of ways and places to celebrate the day with most pubs and restaurants serving up traditional dishes with lots of whiskeys.

Street of Light

This special Old Town architectural installation sees 26 arches of 60,000 lights illuminate the Royal Mile. The lights are synced to music sung and played by choirs from across Edinburgh. The stunning show runs from November 30th to Christmas Eve.

Edinburgh Castle

A trip to Edinburgh isn’t complete with a trip to Edinburgh Castle, no matter the time of year. Edinburgh Castle is the most visited attraction in the city. Take a guided tour and even enjoy a three-course lunch in the snow-dusted Castle in the lead up to Christmas.
