Fancy a drive? Here are our top 3 roads to drive on in the Peak District

The Peak District is a feast for the eyes. The National Park is a popular destination for those who enjoy getting out in the beautiful scenery. It’s not just a place that can be explored on foot, either. With over 1,438 square kilometres, you’ll do well to cover it all by walking.

Thankfully, there are plenty of scenic drives through the Peak District with plenty of places to stop off along the way. A drive around the Peak District is considered by most as the best way to see the stately homes, points of interest and idyllic towns and villages.

Often named as the most impressive area for driving, the Peak District has a breath-taking landscape with views around every corner, but here are some of the scenic drives in the Peak District that we recommend for your car hire:

The Woodhead pass

The Woodhead pass on the A628 is one of the main roads connecting Manchester to South Yorkshire and cuts straight through the north of the Peak District. Although it is a major road, it has magnificent views over the countryside due to the elevation of the road.

Starting at Hollingworth, head east to Stocksbridge. On this 19 mile stretch of road, you’ll pass a number of reservoirs.

Castleton to Hope

Castleton is often named as one of the most beautiful villages in the Peak District. It’s well worth a visit and if you’re already there, there is a dramatic drive to truly appreciate to surrounding nature.

To the west of Castleton is Mom Tor. From here turn down the narrow road towards Edale and take in the stunning views that look over the two valleys of Hope and Edale. Driving through in the summer months, the heather turns the valley purple. Follow the road around until you end in Hope for a drink in the local pub. Coming in at under 10 miles, the drive is short but very sweet!

Derwent Dams

Derwent Reservoir is the middle of three reservoirs in the Upper Derwent Valley in the northeast of Derbyshire. This valley is a popular spot for those who enjoy the attractive mix of water and woodland.

Starting at Hollow Meadows, head towards LadyBower Resevoir on the A57. When you reach the reservoir turn right and drive up the left side of the Ladybower, Derwent and Howden Reservoirs for nearly eight miles. A the top, there is a terrific view of the reservoirs and dams.
