Government Cars Go Electric

The government is urging us to lead by their example, as Downing Street has had its first electric car charging point fitted earlier this month. Judging from the recent updates to the area, we could soon see government officials attending business engagements in electric cars. A boost from government could certainly help citizens of the UK push the electric market.
Although, it isn't just Downing Street which is set to get the green treatment this year, the new £5m scheme is set to curb running costs and emissions for public sector fleets. The initiative is suspected to include the NHS and the police forces. The government are hoping that by switching public sector fleets to electric cars, money will be saved.
The Minister of Transport Baroness Kramer said that the government was now “putting its money where its mouth is” in regards to the roll-out of low emission vehicles.
A confirmed list of suitable electric vehicles has not yet been revealed, however it is expected to include the Nissan Leaf, among other models currently being sold in the UK - as the replacements for ministerial cars. A widely rumored replacement for the higher-end models in the official fleets is the Tesla Model S, only released in the UK this May. The Tesla Model S is proving to be a popular model in the UK, sales could be pushed even further once the new scheme is rolled out across the board.
