Just a few weeks ahead of Christmas, car rental company Green Motion UK has confirmed that they are carbon neutral going into 2020.
The environmentally friendly vehicle hire firm offsets every mile that they and their customers drive, meaning that the company is able to offer carbon neutral Christmas journeys for all their clients.
Green Motion UK first set up its carbon neutral initiative in the summer of 2017, making it the first and only vehicle hire business in Britain to achieve carbon neutral status. For every car hired, the company offsets carbon emissions by supporting environmental projects, their customers are also invited to donate.
“As a company committed to environmental principles in a sector not known for its green credentials, maintaining our carbon neutral certification is very important to us,” comments Sian Marston, managing director at Green Motion UK. “We aim to show the industry that there are ways to operate profitably in the vehicle rental business while maintaining a commitment to ecological practice.”
Green Motion has achieved the certification by offsetting the carbon produced by their fleet as well as investing in the latest green vehicle technology. The support helps to fund two ecological projects: one supporting the Portal Para deforestation scheme in the Amazon and the other supporting a project developing wind power in India.
“Green Motion UK already offers the lowest CO2 emission car hire of any of its like-for-like competitors, but we felt we wanted to be more proactive in supporting some of the initiatives that represent our ethos,” adds Sian. “The Amazon Rainforest supplies more than 20 per cent of the world’s oxygen. However, deforestation by commercial logging and subsistence farming has led to the destruction of one-fifth of the rainforest. We need to take action to try and offset some of the damage that is done to the environment as a result of the way that we live our lives in the 21st century.”
Green Motion was launched in 2006 and is the only vehicle rental company in the UK dedicated to increasing the uptake of low-emission vehicles and reducing pollution levels. Averaging CO2 emissions of below 100g/km across the fleet, their vehicles are more efficient and ecologically friendly than the average emissions from new cars.
There are now over 450 Green Motion branches over 47 countries worldwide, with 29 branches in the UK.
