After you’ve safely arrived in Birmingham and collected your hire car from Green Motion Birmingham New Street, we know that you will be eager to get your car on the road and start exploring the United Kingdom.
If you are unfamiliar with driving in the United Kingdom, it is important to remember that you must drive on the left hand side of the road. We also recommend that you consider hiring a GPS (SatNav) to ensure that you arrive at your destination with speed and accuracy.
Enjoy your car hire in Birmingham
If this is your first time driving a car in Birmingham, our advice is to stay calm and take your time. As already mentioned, remember to drive on the left. We also recommend for your own peace of mind to consider hiring a GPS to ensure you can navigate around Birmingham with ease (ask at the rental counter for details).
There are many roundabouts throughout the UK, they are actually relatively easy to manoeuvre around (once you get your head around them) and they help to keep the flow of traffic running smoothly. There are two key things to remember when approaching a roundabout: get in the correct lane for the direction you are want to drive (left, straight or right) and always give way to the driver on your right.
When travelling on the motorways or dual carriageways, the speed limit is 70 mph (112 km/h) and 60 mph (97 km/h) on single carriageways. The speed limit outside the city ranges from 40 mph (64 km/h) to 50 mph (80km/h) and 30 mph (48 km/h) in built-up areas unless started otherwise. For your own safety it is important that you obey the local traffic and speed restrictions.
Should you require any assistance while in Birmingham, the UK emergency services can be contacted by calling 999 for police, fire fighters and medical services.

Yes, this is possible. If you booked through our website, please contact our reservations team on [email protected] however there is no guarantee that we will be able to amend your booking but we will try our best to help.
Yes, in all cases the main driver will be required to leave a deposit which will be taken by the method of pre-authorisation from the credit card presented. The level of pre-authorisation taken is dependent on the type of insurance purchased and the agreed excess. Typically the level of pre-authorisation required will mirror the level of agreed excess. In the cases where the hirer has selected a zero excess option, a small deposit / pre-authorisation will be required to cover any traffic violations including parking and speeding offences that may occur while the hire vehicle is in the custody of the hirer.
We would ask you to note that all pre-authorisation’s are released on the completion of the hire following a satisfactory review of the vehicle and its condition noting that any damaged caused to the vehicle while out on hire will be subject to cost with the relevant amount being removed from the pre-authorisation.
Typical deposits / pre-authorisations can range from £200 GBP to £2505 GBP dependent on the car type, age and driving experience of the driver and agreed excess.
Green Motion Birmingham New Street offers their rental customers the opportunity to reduce their excess by purchasing one of our excess reduction packages. Each package provides different benefits ranging from reduction in excess to zero excess. Please ask at the rental counter for more information.
In most cases, each Green Motion location will accept most major credit cards including Visa and MasterCard.
In relation to debit cards (Visa), these are typically accepted for the payment of rentals but unfortunately we cannot secure a deposit / pre-authorisation using a debit card and as such require a valid credit card for the pre-authorisation of the deposit. In addition we are unable to accept cash either for the payment of the rental or for the security deposit.
We would ask you to note that in the event that we are unable to guarantee funds relating to the security deposit on your credit card we will be unable to rent a vehicle to you.
Green Motion Birmingham New Street does not hold the pre-authorisation / deposit in our bank accounts. The pre-authorisation is a block of the agreed amount held against the credit card presented by the issuing bank. As soon as the vehicle has returned and we are happy with the condition of the vehicle, we action a release of the pre-authorisation.
The time taken by the issuing bank to release the pre-authorisation on the credit card varies immensely dependent on the bank and the country of issue. Typically, most pre-authorisations / deposits are released within 7 – 14 days from the return of the rental car.
In the event that you feel a pre-authorisation has not been released with the prescribed time frame it will be necessary for you to make direct contact with the issuing bank as Green Motion Birmingham New Street has no jurisdiction in this matter.
In the event that your journey is delayed, please endeavour to contact Green Motion Birmingham New Street. In most cases we will reserve your car until you arrive for up to 4 hours from the original pick up time. It is important that you make direct contact with the branch if you feel that your delay will exceed 4 hours to avoid us treating the rental as a “no show” and us reselling the rental car.
Green Motion Birmingham New Street’s opening hours are from 08:00 to 18:00 (Monday - Friday) and 08:00 to 16:00 (Saturday & Sunday). In the event that we receive no notification that your arrival has been delayed there is little we can do to facilitate your rental once the rental office is closed. In the event that we have received contact notifying us of your delay, you will be advised whether or not we can accommodate your late arrival and whether or not it will attract any out of hours or late fees.
You are not authorised to return your rental vehicle outside office hours unless prior agreement has been made noting that in the event that agreement has been authorised, it is subject to strict terms and conditions. Typically, return of the rental vehicle outside of rental hours is not authorised.
