Charging points important for neighbourhood of the future

Electric vehicle charging points have been found to be one of the most desired features of future neighbourhoods, according to new research.

The survey by Go Ultra Low showed that 72 per cent of respondents are expecting EVs to be the most common vehicle type on driveways in two decades time. In order to support this increase in uptake, 49 per cent said that installing charging points at every house would be the most desired feature in their future neighbourhood.

“Electric cars are on track to become an essential part of everyday life, and our research backs this up with strong demand for charge points and EV sharing schemes,” said Poppy Welch, head of Go Ultra Low. “Electric cars are high performing, fun, exciting and financially compelling. There are currently over 75,000 on UK roads, a growth of 37 per cent in a year.”

Having charge points at every house may seem like a distant vision, but the government’s Department for Transport (DfT) are showing intent to further improve support for electric vehicles. The DfT recently proposed a number of measures to make charging points more accessible to EV drivers.

The survey also predicted that technology will make people more willing to share a car. 48 per cent said that they expect to share their EV with neighbours and other people living in the area within the next 20 years.

The UK already has the largest network of charge points in Europe (12,000 points) but having more available would undoubtedly increase uptake and benefit current EV drivers. This is an area which many are looking to improve, including several large car firms who are working collectively to create a charging network across Europe.
