Government plans a grant for charging at the workplace

It is expected that the Government will introduce a grant for charging points at the workplace for electric vehicles.

Currently there is a lack of Government support for businesses offering workplace charging points. The scheme is likely to be put into place this summer; however, details of the scheme, such as the amount of funding and length of time it will run, have yet to be revealed.

β€œI am told that there will be an announcement in July about the workplace charging grant,” comments David Martell, CEO of Chargemaster. β€œIt is expected that we would do quite a large number of workplace units when such a grant is in place.”

Discounts are available for domestic charging units but the Government does not offer financial backing for businesses wishing to do the same.

A spokesman for the Department for Transport and the Office for Low Emission Vehicles refused to confirm the plans but said: "Watch this space. Fitting charge points in workplace car parks is a huge opportunity. We know there is an appetite out there from businesses."

Having a greater number of businesses offering charging at the workplace increases the practicality of electric vehicles even further. It would be a major boost in the adoption of EVs.

If you are thinking of purchasing an electric vehicle, it can be useful to hire beforehand to practise and test the car in your day to day life. As experts in low-emission rental, Green Motion have a fleet of electric and hybrid cars with staff that can help you in selecting the right vehicle.
