UK charging bays to outnumber fuel stations in four years’ time?

In May, Nissan found that Japan had more charging points than petrol locations. The Japanese car maker has now claimed that this is a feat that will be matched by the UK by the summer of 2020.

The prediction is made based on the number of fuel stations continuing to fall with EV charging points going in the opposite direction. At the end of 2015 there were just over 8,000 fuel stations in the UK, a large drop from the 37,000 in 1970.

Nissan expects this number to fall to around 7,800 in four years’ time, with EV charging points reaching 7,900 in the same time frame – up from the current 4,000. It has also been said that the estimation is a cautious one, with the crossover potentially coming sooner.

“EV charging infrastructure is keeping pace with the demand for electric vehicles,” comments Edward Jones, EV manager at Nissan. “Combine that with constant improvements in battery performance and we believe the tipping point for mass EV uptake is upon us.”
